Background

UN-Habitat has been actively assisting Kosovo institutions in the field of governance, spatial planning and municipal administration since 1999. The present 'Inclusive Development Programme' aims to provide a strategic, comprehensive package of support to build municipal planning and management capacities, strengthen the social contract and social cohesion, and enhance coordination within a framework of inter-municipal cooperation and multi-level governance with a view to foster inclusive development and good governance in northern Kosovo.

The project is financed by the Swedish Development Cooperation Agency and is jointly implemented with PAX and Community Building Mitrovica and concerned local authorities in Leposavic/Leposaviq, Mitrovica, Mitrovica North, Zubin Potok, and Zvecan/Zvecan as well as Skenderaj/Srbica and Vushtrri/Vucitrn.

The UN-Habitat Inclusive City Planning and Development internship is for 3 months with a possibility for extension depending on the needs of the Organization.The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week (35-40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Main tasks

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned project and office, as well as the internship period.Duties may include, but are not limited to:

Directly reporting to the Chief Technical Advisor, the intern will be responsible for carrying out the following activities:

  1. Provide support for data collection, analysis and mapping.
  2. Assist in strengthening the skills and experience of counterparts, institution building of municipal planning units, also through training delivery.
  3. Promote dialogue among local authorities and civil society and other key stakeholders, and support relevant events, workshops and focus groups, incl. reporting, on various topics such as participatory planning, peace-building, enhanced decentralization, public space, urban safety, urban revitalization, etc.
  4. Contribute to the preparation of various written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, sections of reports and studies, and inputs to publications.
  5. Writing news, press releases and /or editorials.
  6. Writing, translation and/or updating of web and social networks content, and contribute to feedback mechanisms.
  7. Contribute to knowledge-management, communication and outreach activities of the programme.
  8. Undertake tasks in partner Municipalities of the programme, as required.
  9. Provide logistical and administrative support and perform any other functions and tasks which may be required by the nature of the programme’s activities.Competencies

Education

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
Be computer literate in standard software applications.
Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;
Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Preferred area of study: Undergraduate level in architecture, urban planning, social sciences or public information and communication.Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN Language is desirable.
