Tour de Culture: culture meets sports

The synergies of sports and culture were achieved again during a cycling tour in the central part of Kosovo, last Sunday. The promotion of cultural and natural heritage in a healthy way of mobility was never done in such a massive scale with 550 cyclists participating in the event. This year, the tour started at the foot of the ruins of an ancient castle in Novobërdë/Novobrdo and continued through Gracanicë/Gracanica’s Monastery and reaching the final point in front of Prishtina’s newest landmark the NEW BORN. The idea behind the Culture Tour has three aspects: first of all, the promotion of natural and cultural heritage, second - the promotion of non-motorized transport for more efficient mobility for all, and last but not least, the promotion of joint global movement to a safer climate future, which is directly linked to this year’s topic of the World Habitat Day “Cities and Climate Change”. The cyclists were welcomed and hosted by the leaders of these three with traditional local food and fruits. Organised for the 4th time, the Tour de Culture became a popular activity among the Kosovo’s culture and sport community. As an initiative of UN-HABITAT’s Municipal Spatial Planning Support Programme (MuSPP) and Cultural Heritage without Borders, it was first organized in 2008 and it started with a modest number of cyclists. The Culture Tour is growing every year, and now it has reached close to 550 participants and the overarching objective of this tour, the healthy way of mobility, is reaching its effect. On their way, the participants of this years’ event paid tribute to Arben Arapi, a committed cyclist and enthusiast of the Tour of Culture, who supported this event in the past. He died in a road accident last December, when his bike had been hit by a speeding car. His tragic death brought to participants’ attention the issues of road and traffic safety. Over years, this event has been supported by hosting municipalities, different organizations and many other local and international partners like European Council through the project, Support to the Promotion of Cultural Diversity (PCDK), now a regular supporter of the Tour de Culture, The Cyclist Federation and the Cyclist Clubs from the six secondary cities of Kosovo. For the first time this year first time the Group of Organizations for Cleaner Energy also supported the event, as the promoters of the better climate future. This year the event was attractive even for sponsors, respectively local producers like “Trepharm” and “Luboteni”.
