The project was initiated in 2009 as a part of  Disaster risk Assessment Management (DRAM) process. During this process was identified the need for intervention intended for flood reduction in the area. While the draft DRAM document was being prepared, a field survey was carried out and it subse¬quently engaged an external consultant in order to conduct a hydrological study. The project site was chosen to be the neighbourhood “Ura Dudit”. Since then, MuSPP, UN-HABITAT has provided technical sup¬port to the municipality for designing the river bed and surrounding public space. The process of the project selection was transparent and it went through different participatory processes where different stakeholders such as landlords alongside the river, citizen’s from the neighborhood and general public were involved.
Ms. Krystyna Galezia, the Chief Technical Adviser MuSPP/ UN-HBITAT Kosovo expressed her satisfaction for the implementation of this CIP which had the main aim of reducing floods and improving the life of citizens in the area. Ms. Galezia also highlighted the cooperation between the municipality and MuSPP/UN-HABITAT during the entire planning process in Ferizaj/Urosevac.
Mr. Bajrush Xhemaili, the mayor of Ferizaj/Urosevac expressed his gratitude to MuSPP/UN-HABITAT and Sida for the support of implementing the project as well as drafting DRAM documents. Mr. Tomas Nystrom, a representative of Sida-Office in Sweden, congratulated the successful implementation of the project and importance of the impact of the project for environment considering the climate change. Mr. Ajet Qerkini, on behalf of the community, expressed his gratitude and gave a symbolical wooden work as a symbol of appreciation to MuSPP/UN-HABITAT and Sida.
The inauguration ceremony continued with a free walk alongside the riverbed where some stops of snacks and traditional food was offered by the community.
The Flood Reduction project was a 50/50 co-funded project by Municipality of Ferizaj/Urosevac and the Municipal Spatial Planning Support Programme, Phase2 (MuSPP2) of UN-HABITAT in Kosovo, financed by the Swedish Development Cooperation Agency, Sida.
