Inauguration of the new capital investment project LUSHTA RIVER GREEN CORRIDOR in Mitrovica
We are pleased to announce the
inauguration of Capital Investment Project Lushta
River Green Corridor in Mitrovica( Regulation of the junction and path along
Lushta River), as a co-funded project by the Municipality of Mitrovica and Municipal
Spatial Planning Support Programme (MuSPP), implemented by UN-HABITAT and funded by the Government
of Sweden.
The project was identified
in the consultation with the municipality in the course of the implementation
process of strategies and actions provided in MDP/UDP. The Municipal and Urban
Development Plan of Mitrovica, includes the plan to develop green corridors
along the rivers crossing the city: Iber, Sitnica and Lushta. Green Corridors
are an important concept for the structural improvement of the entire city, for
its links with the rural environment and for the neighbourhoods that are in
direct vicinity of the corridors. They would have a variety of functions as
non-motorized transport paths, leisure facilities, and harbours of
bio-diversity and regenerators of urban atmosphere.
The overall objective of the project
is to make a decisive contribution to the creation of the Lushta river green
corridor by improving the environment and functionality of the Lushta river
path and its links to the urban road network. The project was developed as a
participatory planning and capacity building process involving municipal and
civil society stakeholders. It involved a coordination of CSOs including
organizations of women, elderly and mobility impaired; Traffic management class
of the Technical high school of Mitrovica; and the general public. Engaging
people and their neighbourhoods in dialogue and participation in planning
process are essential for improvement of the quality of life in the cities.
The
inauguration ceremony will take place on Wednesday, 14 December 2011 at 10:30 AM,
at the project location in Mitrovica.
Mayor of
Mitrovica municipality Mr. Avni Kastrati, and Mrs. Krystyna Galezia, Head of
UN-HABITAT Office in Kosovo, will address the public with short statements;
therefore media are cordially invited to join this occasion.
