More trees in Kosovos urban centers
On 3rd of July Mr. Richard Ince from UKs Intersilva-Development and Support Services for Farm and Community Based forestry, Mr. Kenton Roger from Treeco2nomics and Mr. Sami Kryeziu from Agro-Vet Development Kosovo visited UN-Habitat Kosovo main office, Municipality of Pristina and made a field trip to Ferizaj/Urosevac. The purpose of their visit in general was to assess the possibility of future cooperation for the Urban Forestry; and in particularly, the future cooperation with UN-Habitat in its project Green Corridor in Ferizaj/Urosevac.
The meeting with the management of the UN-Habitat Office in Kosovo was related to earlier contacts with Intersilva and its Kosovo partners and their potential contribution to the Green Corridor Capital Investment Project (CIP) which is being developed by Municipality of Ferizaj/Urosevac with the support of Municipal Spatial Planning Support Programme funded by Sida and Implemented by UN-Habitat.
In the afternoon, the representatives of Intersilva traveled to Ferizaj/UrosevacĀ and met with Ms. Qazime Vata, the Director of the Directorate of Urbanism, Geodesy and Cadastre and Mr. Mustafe Zariqi, the Head of Planning Unit of the municipality. During the meeting, the municipal representatives explained the planning condition in the municipality in general; and more in detail about the Green Corridor CIP. Mr. Ince expressed his interest for possible involvement in the CIP implementation with different means of support. In addition he encouraged the Mr. Kryeziu and the team to follow up on the possible cooperation.
After the meeting, the representatives of Sida with MusPP staff in Ferizaj/Urosevac visited the project site and area of Parku i Lirise.
During their visitĀ in Kosovo, Mr. Ince and Mr. Roger met also with the representatives of the Municipality of Pristina/Pristina to presented their pilot project The value of trees- The Torbay i-Tree implemented in Torbay, UK. According to their presentation, detailed assessment was conducted in order to measure the species, three dimensions, tree conditions, ground cover type, and land use in Torbay for the expected outputs such as carbon stored by trees, air pollution removal, value of trees etc.
Mr. Agim Gashi, the Director of Department of Public Services and Civil Emergency in the Municipality of Pristina/Pristina, expressed the municipalitys interested to cooperate with Intersilva and Treeco2nomics for undertaking a similar study as conducted in Torbay. Mr. Gashi stated that Prishtina/Pristina lacks the expertise in tree planting; and for improving the environmental condition, he expressed that the municipality strongly welcome for future support in the field of urban forestry.
