Planning and cultural heritage in Kosovo presented during WUF 6 in Naples

Representatives of UN-Habitat Office in Kosovo and of Cultural Heritage without Borders (CHwB) presented their cooperation in the field on planning and incorporation of cultural heritage in municipal and urban development plans. The presentation titled “How is post-conflict society dealing with planning and cultural heritage” was delivered to international audience participating in the World Urban Forum  6 in Naples, on 4th of September , 2012.
The presentation focused on four topics selected from key areas in which Municipal Spatial Planning Support  Programme is engaged; these included: visioning as planning tool, in-house planning, disaster risk assessment management and placemaking.  The cultural heritage aspect was covered by CHwB. The presentation drew attention of more than 70 people who attended the event  and who were  interested to  know how  Kosovo deals with planning and cultural heritage. The presentation triggered many questions from the  audience who wanted to know more about the shift from the centralized planning system to the decentralized and strategic one.   The presentation touched on the post conflict urbanization in Kosovo, institutional capacities and legislative framework for spatial and urban planning, and capital investment projects focused on disaster risk reduction, improvement of public spaces and protection and reconstruction of cultural heritage.
The event offered an opportunity to launch two publications developed under the Municipal Spatial Planning Support Programme:  Visioning as Participatory Planning Tool, and Turning Spaces into Places, a practical guide to placemaking. Both of these publications draw from Kosovo experience and present examples how specific techniques a, methods and tools were used in Kosovo context.  In response to the call for saving trees and making the event “paper free”,  the publications and other  MuSPP materials were distributed electronically and are now being translated into Albanian and Serbian version.
The sixth World Urban Forum (WUF) was held in Naples, Italy, on    1-7 of September, 2012 and more 10 thousand attendees participated in more than 160 events. MuSPP participants had a chance to take part in different presentations, side  and parallel events, networking meetings, listen to panel discussions during four Dialogue sessions, professional and staff retreats,  attend special thematic meetings focused on women and youth , and many more. All this gave an opportunity to further promote the program amongst different actors and urban professionals present in the forum.
The next World Urban Forum will be held in 2014 in Medellin, Colombia.
