The first workshop to identify a capital investment project in the municipality of Rahovec/Orahovac was held on 17.12.2012 at the municipal assembly hall. The improvement of schoolyards has been selected as a priority identified by the municipality through the municipal participatory planning process. The workshop was jointly organized by the municipality of Rahovec/Orahovac, Directorate of Urbanism, together with Un-Habitat's Municipal Spatial Planning Support Programme (MuSPP) in Kosovo, funded by the Swedish government.

This workshop was attended by 54 participants from various institutions, such as municipal officials from the field of urban planning and education as well as school directors form Rahovec/Orahovac municipality, teachers and students of the municipal elementary and secondary schools.

The workshop opened with welcoming remarks from the Director of Urbanism Mr. Fatmir Kryeziu, followed by the speech of Ms. Catarina Camarinhas, representative of UN-Habitat. During the workshop a presentation on "Public participation in planning" was given by Ms. Arijeta Himaduna (MuSPP) and also on "Gender Issues in Projects", by Ms. Habibe Haxhimustafa, gender officer in the Municipality of Rahovec/Orahovac. Mr. Vesel Krasniqi, representative of the Directorate of Education, gave a presentation on the current situation regarding the schoolyards in the Municipality of Rahovec/Orahovac. A debate on the Millennium Development Goals Post-2015 closed the event, facilitated by Ms. Engjëllushe Morina, on behalf of UN Kosovo Team.

During the workshop the participants worked in small groups, in identifying the problems and needs for the premises of their schools. Also, individually, they completed the questionnaire which will serve as a basis for the development of the project, providing elements and information for the next steps. The participating school children stressed the need for greenery, sports facilities, lighting and maintenance.

The workshop aimed also at introducing the concept of sustainable schoolyards and assessing how it can be applied in the specific context of Rahovec/Orahovac, considering the idea of the school as an important centre for the community. Within this context, the students of Rahovec/Orahovac  have identified the possibilities of also making use of the schoolyard space by the community and not only by the pupils, extension of the schoolyards, and ideas such as botanic gardens and laboratories, solar lighting, bicycle lanes and bicycle parking. These first ideas will be part of a first round of suggestions to be incorporated as a basis for the school competition and call for ideas, which will be organized within the participatory process of drafting the project. The project will be co-funded by UN-Habitat and the Municipality of Rahovec/Orahovac on a cost-sharing basis.
