Inauguration of Moronica Natural Park in Junik, Kosovo

The Municipality of Junik, together with the Municipal Spatial Planning Support Programme (MuSPP) implemented by UN-Habitat and financed by the Swedish Development Cooperation, held an inauguration of the capital investment project (CIP) of Moronica Natural Park in Junik on January 28, 2014. The capital investment project is a result from the planning process and was developed jointly by the Municipality of Junik and MuSPP, through a participatory process.

Moronica is one of the main features of the wooded mountainous landscape of the Municipality of Junik. It marks the beginning of Junik Mountains, located in the south-west of Kosovo. Moronica extends along the river Ereniku, which offers a natural physical separation from the city. During the 1960's pine trees were planted in the area of Moronica as a protective measure from the risk of landslide. In 2008, the Municipal Assembly of Junik issued the decision no. 01/08, "On the declaration of Moronica complex - particular area of the Municipality of Junik". The project comes as a continuation of the process of protection and bringing this area to the community use.

The site now inaugurated offers a public space for the recreation of the citizens, with regulated paths for walking and jogging within Moronica, an amphitheatre, an observation point, areas for rest with wooden seats, a camping site, water drinking fountains and other elements, and will also be a support for research and environmental educational activities. The Park area is connected to the city centre via pedestrian bridges over the Ereniku River. The project was drafted using a participatory process approach, where the local community, Municipal staff, the University of Pristina and other stakeholders were involved. The new site considered principles of sustainable and innovative "eco" design, contributing to promote the traditional construction techniques and the use of natural materials, integrating in the existing landscape.
