Zatra Green Boulevard inauguration

The inauguration ceremony of Zatra Green Boulevard took place on January 29, 2014 in Peja/Pec. The project is deriving from the municipal spatial planning process (Municipal/Urban Development and Urban Regulatory Plans) and came as the result of a participatory design approach, together with other partners such as MOBKOS - Urban Mobility in Kosovo, and the University of Ghent. The project is integrated in a city-wide approach to promote connectivity and soft mobility. Zatra neighbourhood was subject of an Urban Regulatory Plan, developed jointly by UN-Habitat and the municipality of Peja/Pec.

The initiative is inter-related to the system of mobility that is being implemented in the municipality of Peja/Pec and in Zatra Informal Settlement in particular. The Green Boulevard aims to keep the originality and intimacy of Zatra settlement and to materialize the notion of shared space as a way to reduce the dominance of motor vehicles, primarily through lower speeds and encouragement to drivers to behave more accommodatingly towards pedestrians and (motor)cycles. While improving the living conditions of Zatra inhabitants (infrastructure, access to public transportation, safety, urban furniture), the project is a further step to contributing to the integration of the neighbourhood into the formal urban fabric. Further vegetation will be planted during springtime by the municipality of Peja/Pec.

The project is co-funded by the municipality and the Municipal Spatial Planning Support Programme financed by the Swedish Development Cooperation and implemented by UN-Habitat.
