Sustainable Schoolyards, a step closer to environmental sustainability for the Municipality of Rahovec/Orahovac

The Capital Investment Project "Sustainable Schoolyards", implemented in two sites - the center of Rahovec/Orahovac Gymnasium "Xhelal Hajda-Toni" and the primary school "Hamëz Thaqi" Xërxe/Zerze, was inaugurated on the 03rd of February. This joint investment by the Municipality of Rahovec/Orahovac and the Municipal Spatial Planning Support Programme (MuSPP) derived from the Municipal Development Plan of Rahovec/Orahovac, as a translation of planning into concrete improvements and changes for the benefit of the citizens in terms of education, enjoyment and environment development.

The ceremony of inauguration was held at both project sites, attended by many students, school teachers, parents and other community members as well as representatives from the municipal administration and MuSPP. The Mayor of the municipality of Rahovec/Orahovac, Mr. Idriz Vehapi expressed his gratitude for the overall support provided by MuSPP in addressing environmental issues through the capital investment project and associated activities that contribute to enhancing the understanding and importance of preserving the environment today and for future generations.

The Head of UN-Habitat Office in Kosovo, Ms. Gwendoline Mennetrier welcomed the implementation of the project and acknowledged the innovative approach for 'place-making' undertaken by the municipality and the memorable contributions of the schools in Rahovec/Orahovac to the process.

The capital investment project "Sustainable Schoolyards" is seen as a showcase for other Kosovo Municipalities due to the inclusive and transparent process of project development and implementation as well as the pioneering approach of open competition.  Public engagement, collective brainstorming on urban matters and the ideal schoolyard, alongside the joint development of the design proposals, provided a greater sense of ownership for the community and grounds for sustainable maintenance of the project.

The project has been co-funded by the Municipality of Rahovec/Orahovac and MuSPP programme, implemented by UN-Habitat and funded by the Swedish Development Cooperation.
