Prizren historic heart enriched by a brand new Prizren League Square

On 05th of November 2015, in Prizren was inaugurated by Mayor of Prizren Mr. Ramadan Muja and Head of UN-Habitat in Kosovo Mrs. Gwendoline Mennetrier the Capital Investment Project "Upgrading the Prizren League Square", as a joint investment of the Municipality of Prizren, the Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning (MESP) and the Municipal Spatial Planning Support Programme (MuSPP) implemented by UN-Habitat and funded by the Swedish Development Cooperation.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by the municipal authorities, international partners and local NGOs.

"By implementing this capital project we targeted to enrich Prizren city with one more space of special importance for all citizens of Prizren, respectively an old Shatërvan with a very functional new Shatërvan. We express our gratitude to UN-Habitat for the support provided not only for this project but also for the previous project "Revitalization of Farkatarëve Road", both projects generated great and qualitative public space that will serve to the citizens for a longtime. We also thank the Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning that always supported us financially for projects of this nature," said Mayor of Prizren Mr. Ramadan Muja.

Mrs. Gwendoline Mennetrier congratulated the municipality, it staff, its Partners, including a major one, MESP, and the communities for the work accomplished in support of revitalizing the Square of Prizren League, now a brand new public space. At UN-Habitat, she said, we think that well designed and well managed public space is a crucial and a key asset for city's functioning and prosperity and has a positive impact on its economy, environment, safety, health, integration and connectivity. The quality of life for people in cities is indeed directly related to the state of its public spaces. She recalled that the development process of this Capital Investment Project was also the result of a close partnership, both technical and financial, between Prizren municipality, MESP and MuSPP, and involvement of a wide range of stakeholders in the scenario development and design for this area.

The 'Prizren League Square' capital investment project was identified within an Area Audit activity implemented in 2009 by the municipality, MuSPP together with local stakeholders; a transactional walk in four routes of Prizren historic zone enabled the joint identification of areas that would need improvement or revitalization.

The whole project cycle was developed through application of participatory planning techniques and innovative design standards and followed carefully orientations provided by the Municipal Development Plan, the Conservation Plan as well as the Guidelines for Development of Prizren Historic Zone.

The project being at the heart of the city achieves to provide an enjoyable and accessible space for all, a safe connectivity with other sites of the historic zone of Prizren but moreover creates a user and business friendly environment.
