MuSPP joins OSCE in raising awareness on housing and property rights
A series of
regional roundtables on housing and property rights, organised by OSCE in
cooperation with UN-HABITATs Municipal Spatial Planning Support Programme were
held throughout Kosovo between May 4 and 8, 2009.
These
roundtables brought together municipal authorities and relevant ministries,
public utilities providers, civil society actors and the international
community in Kosovo, who discussed housing and property rights. The roundtables
aimed at developing strategies to improve access to secure property tenure and
basic housing standards for all persons in Kosovo, also in the context of
informal settlements.
A recent
survey conducted by OSCE and analysed by MuSPP team showed a great diversity in the typology of
informal settlements and indicated the need for a better understanding by all
partners of the differences between informal settlements and illegal buildings.
Addressing the issues of informal settlements is one of the key objectives of
the Municipal Spatial Planning Support Programme and is closely linked with
UN-HABITATs mandate and its commitments ensuing from the Millennium
Development Goals.
These workshops were a follow up to earlier initiatives conducted by the same partners in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning. The Ministry, also represented during the events, is currently working on a strategy for addressing informal settlements.
