Citizens assess area near Lushta River in Mitrovica

Municipal officers, MuSPP team and other stakeholders including representatives of “Little People of Kosovo”, OSCE, Bypass NGO, the Association of the Deaf, teachers and pupils from the “Architect Sinani” Technical School and local businesses, met on February 4,2010 to discuss possible solutions for the improvement of the Lushta River area, in Mitrovica.

The event started with an area audit which gave the participants the opportunity to identify existing movement barriers and assess what are the potentials for improvement. During the audit, the participants paid attention to specific mobility, accessibility and safety aspects and reflected them in an audit questionnaire. The area walk was followed by a workshop held at the “Arkitekt Sinani” Technical School, where the participants expressed their ideas on the problems encountered during the area audit. They also shared ideas on possible solutions for improving the infrastructure along the Lushta River.

The concept of the “Lushta River Green Corridor” project in Mitrovica was presented to a capital  projects panel in panel in September 2009. The panel composed of Sida, CHwB and MESP representatives expressed its positive opinion about the project and qualified it for implementation. The project is currently in the phase of design and its implementation will be financed jointly by the Municipality of Mitrovica and MuSPP.

Green corridors along the city’s rivers are the most significant feature for the improvement of the city's green and blue infrastructure, and as such, are featured in the Municipal Development Plan. The project aims at improving connections from the Lushta River to the city's streets and pedestrian networks in three locations, as well as to enhance the functional value of the Lushta River.
