Towards improved public spaces and water supply in Hani i Elezit/Elez Han

On 8th of July 2014, the Municipality of Hani i Elezit/Elez Han and UN-Habitat's Municipal Spatial Planning Support Programme (MuSPP) funded by the Swedish Development Cooperation exchanged an Agreement of Cooperation for co-funding a Capital Investment Project (CIP) in the said Municipality. The CIP will improve public spaces in Paldenica and Gorance, the two biggest villages of Hani I Elezit.

The Parties were represented by the Mayor of Hani i Elezit, Mr. Rufki Suma, whilst UN-Habitat's MuSPP was represented by Mrs. Gwendoline Mennetrier, Chief Technical Advisor. Mr. Suma expressed his gratitude for overall UN Habitat's support given to the Municipality of Hani i Elezit/Elez and promised municipality's commitment to the quality and timely implementation the project.

The project is resulting from the Feasibility Study for Improvement and Management of Hani I Elezit Water Supply. The CIP was developed "in-house" through an inclusive, participatory and transparent process. During the project development, several workshops were held involving directly counterparts (citizens, civil society alongside Municipality and MuSPP).

As mentioned, the project will be implemented in two villages, with a view to creating open spaces on the on-hand that are easy to reach for community gathering, meeting and passive recreation and on the other an alternative of supply with drinking water for the villagers.  The Project will also provide urban furniture as part of improving the created spaces as well as regulate/improve some of the main accesses towards these spaces and other important areas of the villages.

The project costs are estimated to be around 78,000 Euros and financing will be shared between the Municipality of Hani I Elezit/Elez Han and MuSPP. The implementation of this project is expected to commence after procurement procedures are undertaken by the Municipality.
