Improved access to the Primary School in Hani i Elezit successfully completed

On the 3rd of October, the Municipality of Hani i Elezit (HiE) and UN-Habitat's MuSPP (Municipal Spatial Planning Support Programme financed by the Swedish Development Cooperation) inaugurated a Capital Investment Project (CIP) aiming at regulating the north access of HiE primary school.

The event gathered representatives and staff from the Municipality, the primary school and UN-Habitat, as well as school students and neighbouring citizens.

The Mayor, Mr. Rufki Suma, expressed to MuSPP the municipality's gratitude for the overall support in different projects and his satisfaction about the positive changes brought by the project by creating further mobility and recreational facilities for both students and citizens. UN-Habitat's CTA, Ms. Gwendoline Mennetrier congratulated the Mayor, the municipality and the Partners for the work accomplished in supporting the project development and implementation. She emphasized the fact that the project selection reflected priorities identified within approved spatial plans and was also in line with key principles to improve public spaces being supported by UN-Habitat, such as improved mobility and interconnectivity, enhanced safety and enjoyment by the users. She also praised the inclusive project development process, from joint identification to implementation, as a key achievement. Finally she highlighted the importance of maintaining these areas through a joint effort of all.

The project implementation was covered by both parties in the proportion 50/50.  Tendering and implementation of the project were municipality's responsibility with MuSPP monitoring support. Through meeting its objectives of regulating the access to the school and its yard, the project in reality offers greater opportunities for pre-school and other kids to have more places to socialize, have joy and be safe in the same time. All students and citizens are also provided with better commuting areas to the school and other urban areas. All these opportunities were introduced through safe, better organized and paved access roads, added greenery, urban furniture, construction of playing equipments and play areas for kids, etc.

This project is part of a wider contribution of MuSPP to support improved public spaces in HiE, i.e. the city center upgrading project (2011) and on-going project in the two biggest villages of HiE.
