Up-to-date Solid Waste Management Plan for Hani i Elezit

The Municipality of Hani i Elezit with UN-Habitat's MuSPP support, just finalised the revision of the Local Solid Waste Management Plan (LSWMP). The process was participatory and included a capacity building component in support of all relevant municipal departments.

The Mayor, Mr. Rufik Suma, and UN-Habitat CTA, Ms. Gwendoline Mennetrier, had an opportunity to discuss the Plan which provides room for updated priorities, target, activity and financial plan, as well as alignment with the recently approved national plan and strategy for solid waste management.

The Plan, which offers ways forward for a healthier and free-of-waste municipality, will be soon submitted to the Municipal Assembly for discussion and endorsement. The Municipality wants to continue to improve the waste collection services and street cleansing, as well as promote composting through demonstration pilots, introduce recycling, clean-up all illegal disposal sites and utilise construction and demolition waste. A campaign to increase the efficiency of fee collection will be started soon, in addition to public awareness activities, targeting the youth through a mandatory environmental education school programme. The LSWMP also includes measures related to the need for the development of waste management expertise and skills among municipal staff.
