Block by Block Prishtina: the concept design discussed and validated with residents and friends from Sunny Hill!

As a follow-up to the Minecraft workshop held in September which involved various stakeholders of Sunny Hill neighbourhood, and in the spirit of continued community participation at all phases of the project, the Municipality of Prishtina and UN-Habitat organized on December 10, 2015 at Iliria College a public meeting to present and discuss the project's concept design devised for the former market site in Sunny Hill, inspired from the final Minecraft design solution.

The opening of the meeting by both the Director of Urbanism, Mr. Liburn Aliu, and UN-Habitat representative, Ms. Gwendoline Mennetrier, emphasized the importance of involving the citizens throughout capital investment projects development as a mean to encourage civic participation in current and future planning and design processes for more inclusive cities and neighbourhoods. It was also said that this particular stage concretises feedback mechanisms enabling permanent dialogue and understanding between the local authority and constituencies and valuing community suggestions for the way forward. Mr. Florim Krasniqi, Head of Planning Unit at the Municipality of Prishtina, recapitulated all project steps starting from the identification of the project site to the Minecraft Charrette during which different stakeholders provided their contribution through self-redesigning the said space using "Minecraft" software, as a basis for the concept design. Ms. Linda Spahiu, municipal official of the Public Services department, presented the concept of urban design of the selected area by explaining in detail the connections/accesses to and within the area, the multi-purpose and physical arrangement of the new public space that now provides places for socializing, passive and active recreation, walking and business as well; materials proposed to be used, greenery, urban furniture, etc. She also highlighted the fact that the design generally reflects the stakeholders input entwined by the designers with adding of technical details that were seen appropriate and necessary.

The debate stressed the importance to put in place appropriate and sustainable mechanisms for the maintenance of the new 'former market site', as a corner stone of further developing and preserving public space in Prishtina.

The Municipality of Prishtina confirmed the implementation would start in early spring.
