MuSPP's inclusive approach to spatial planning: an example to successful participatory processes for inspiring others!

MuSPP was invited to share its experience on participatory planning and gender mainstreaming for the second time at The Urban Planning and Development School- 3rd training module, co-organized by the local NGO "EC Ma Ndryshe" and Kosovo Foundation for Open Society (KFOS). The training held during 25-26th of June, brought together 20 participants from central and local administration as well as various institutions from the civil society such media, local NGOs, business community, students and researchers.

MuSPP facilitated two interactive sessions composed by presentations, group work exercise as well as plenary discussions.

The first session 'A decade of participatory planning in Kosovo: Principles of public participation in spatial planning' presented MuSPP approach in addressing the main principles of participation in various projects throughout the decade of its support to Kosovo institutions such as inclusiveness, relevance, equality and empowerment, as well as the achievements in applying such approach.

The second session 'A decade of participatory planning in Kosovo: Approach, methodology and tools' outlined the main MuSPP methodological tools applied in strategic planning processes as well as managing Capital Investment Projects. The presentation addressed a number of issues such as the main steps in organizing a participatory process, who are the stakeholders, why gender is a spatial planning issue but also methodological tools applied in planning processes with a focus on visioning and project identification methodologies.

An outstanding input to the discussion came from the participants representing MuSPP partner institutions. They shared with all their respective experiences with MuSPP and praised the programme's original contribution to spatial planning processes in Kosovo at both strategic planning as well as project development level, notably through very engaging kick-start methodologies and accountability being built owing to consistent and inclusive activities throughout the process.
