What can we learn from the Barcelona Market Model? Discussions initiated on Mitrovica Market Places!
Within the Public Space Mitrovica North Project, UN-Habitat initiated a series of joint meetings and focus groups in Mitrovica North and South on market places development and management that took place on 14-15 June 2016.
These meetings gathered a team from the Municipality of Barcelona (Institute for Municipal Markets, International cooperation and Urban planning departments), which possesses a recognized expertise in public space and municipal markets planning and management, as well as participants from the variety of institutions and stakeholders that are related to the management/ use of markets in both Mitrovica South and North.
In the spirit of experience and practices sharing, the Barcelona team presented municipal market revitalization process as it has been conducted in Barcelona. Emphasis was made on the need for a wide, long-term spatial/social/economic development strategy, as well as on the importance of having producers, sellers and customer associations as the municipality key interlocutors. Ensuing discussions enabled to exchange on the situation of green and street market places in Mitrovica, its current dynamics and challenges in relation to market conditions, urban planning, urban mobility and connectivity between neighbourhoods and people.
Initial findings will lay the ground for further exploring potentials and requirements towards revitalisation of the concerned market and city areas and enhanced performance of the market components in both Mitrovica North and South, and for undertaking cooperation activities in these fields.
