Sustainable schoolyards workshop in Rahovec

The first workshop to identify a capital investment project in the municipality of Rahovec/Orahovac was held on 17.12.2012 at the municipal assembly hall. The improvement of schoolyards has been selected as a priority identified by the municipality through the municipal participatory planning process. The workshop was jointly organized by the municipality of Rahovec/Orahovac, Directorate of Urbanism, together with Un-Habitat's Municipal Spatial Planning Support Programme (MuSPP) in Kosovo, funded by the Swedish government.click here for more information

Assessing sustainability in Municipal development plans

UN-Habitat's Municipal Spatial Planning Support Program (MuSPP) in Kosovo, in collaboration with the municipalities of Gracanica, Mamusha, Prizren and Rahovec and with the expert support of independent international consultants, is developing the strategic environmental assessment (SEA) of local development plans. The municipalities of Malisheve and Partesh will soon be joining the process of SEA, which is developed as a support to the MDP processes. Whilst collaborating to evaluate environmental vulnerability, SEA aims at giving focus to sustainable development. As part of the process, Municipal authorities, together with independent environmental experts, are evaluating the environmental dimension of their on-going proposed local plans and deriving local planning actions, namely by establishing environmental objectives, defining targets and indicators to help measure the change and predict impacts of the proposed plans on the environment and also by developing mitigation measures for the foreseen negative impacts occurring from proposed development (e.g. proposing a green corridor as a way of minimizing impact from a new proposed road).click here for more information

Design of the Green Corridor close to completion

On 10th December 2012, the Municipality of Ferizaj/Urosevac supported by the UN-Habitat's Municipal Spatial Planning Support Programme (MusPP), organized a public presentation on urban design for the Capital Investment Project (CIP). The urban design for the green corridor was presented to citizens and different stakeholders, who have been actively participating in the ongoing process since the initiation phase of the project. The representatives from Sida visited MuSPP partner municipalities

As part of the Tri-Partite Review Meeting (TPR), technical meetings were held on November 13 to 15, 2012, between UN-Habitat’s Municipal Spatial Planning Support Programme (MuSPP) in Kosovo, the delegation of the Swedish Development and Cooperation Agency (Sida) and local partners. The representatives from Sida visited the Municipalities of Mamusha, Gračanica and Prizren. Ms. Elizabeth Narrowe and other representatives of the Sida Office in Sweden and Kosovo were accompanied by Mrs. Krystyna Galezia, Head of UN-Habitat Office in Kosovo, MuSPP management staff and MuSPP National Planning Officers.click here for more information

A new UN-Habitat City Resilience Profiling Programme

16 November 2012

UN-Habitat announced on Thursday that it is seeking city partners to pilot a new integrated urban planning and management model to help cities build reslience against disasters such as the recent superstorm Sandy which crashed through coastlines from the Caribbean and north America's Atlantic seaboard, or tsunamis and earthquakes. "This is founded on the principles of 'resilience' which dynamically underpin and improve capacity to protect city people and their assets," said Dan Lewis, the agency's Chief of Urban Risk Reduction. "Urban resilience refers to the ability of any urban system, to withstand and recover quickly from so-called 'critical events'."click here for more information

Citizens and planners discussed scenarios for Green Corridor in Ferizaj/Urosevac

On 17th October 2012, the Municipality of Ferizaj/Urosevac supported by the UN-Habitat's Municipal Spatial Planning Support Programme (MusPP), organized an urban design workshop for the Capital Investment Project (CIP) - the Green Corridor. The workshop involved different stakeholders including civil society, Kosovo Police (KP), municipal officers and citizens from the neighboring area. Ms. Qazime Vata, the director of Urbanism Property Geodesy and Cadastre, in her opening speech, welcomed the participants and reassured them that their opinions would always play the important role in spatial/urban planning developments in Ferizaj/Urosevac and project development.click here for more information

Malisheva/Malisevo challenges workshop

In the process of drafting the Municipal Development Plan (MDP) for Malisheva/Malisevo municipality, UN-Habitat's Municipal Spatial planning Support Programme together with the municipality organised the workshop on identifying Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats. The workshop also included the discussion on the development challenges for this municipality. Strategic Environmental Assessment in Rahovec

The Municipality of Rahovec is in the process of drafting the Municipal Development Plan (MDP) with the professional support from UN-Habitat's MuSPP. The Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA), required by Kosovo Law, is being drafted by external consultant Kadri Tillemann. Ms. Tillemann conducted a workshop with municipal officers on the 4th of October 2012 with the focus on engaging the municipality of Rahovec in the SEA process in a participatory manner, while developing capacity building on the domain of environmental assessment and methods. The themes addressed included the need to identify the main data gaps in the MDP, presentation of environmental issues of the MDP, and a first approach to the identification of objectives, targets and indicators within the SEA process.click here for more information

Cycling for City Change in Kosovo

Organised for the fifth time, this year’s Tour de Culture put together more than 700 cycling enthusiasts in the Eastern part of Kosovo. The tour started from Stublla e Epërme/Gornja Stubla an uphill picturesque village, with a special cultural and heritage value in Kosovo. It continued to Partesh/Partes to visit one of the village’s most interesting churches. The tour ended after 26 kilometers in the music school of Gjilan/Gnjilane. The most important contribution of this tour still remains on the establishment of the environmentally friendly modes of transport, with an emphasis on culture and heritage as an alternative way of its promotion.click here for more information

MuSPP organises seminar for the WORLD HABITAT DAY 2012, on 1st of October

The United Nations has designated the first Monday of October every year as World Habitat Day. The idea is to reflect on the state of our towns and cities and the basic right of all, to adequate shelter. It is also intended to remind the world of its collective responsibility for the future of the human habitat. On Monday October 1st, UN-Habitat’s Municipal Support Program in Kosovo will be participating in the celebrations of the World Habitat Day 2012 dedicated this year to the theme Changing cities, building opportunities. Planning and cultural heritage in Kosovo presented during WUF 6 in Naples

Strategic Environmental Assessment for MDP of Gracanica launched

As part of the drafting of the Municipal Development Plan (MDP) for the municipality of Gracanica, UN-Habitat has launched the process of Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) of the first part of this document. UN-Habitat MuSPP’s external expert, Ms. Ana Petrovska, met with the members of the municipal planning team (MPT) in Gracanica on 15th and 16th of March 2012 to explain the process of the SEA and discuss key aspects of planned development which need to be considered by the team.
